If you have the correct tools, knowledge, and techniques, drilling into brick can be a simple process. Of course, bricks are incredibly durable building materials that can be hard to penetrate. However, with our help, you should be able to drill into your brick with no issues.
This guide will go over everything you need to know about drilling into brick. This way you can hang up your decorations, lights, and other fixtures!
Step by Step Guide: How to Drill Into Brick
Drilling into brick is entirely possible. Though it might seem difficult to drill into this material at first, especially in comparison to wood or drywall, you just need the right tools.
Step One
To begin this process, you will need to gather up your materials. This will include the following items:
– A sharpie
– Tape measurement
– Power drill
– Masonry drill bits
– A leveling tool
– Safety goggles
– Something to protect your ears
– Some masking tape
– Clean up supplies like a mop or vacuum
Step Two
The second step involves planning where you will drill into your brick. You can either drill directly into your brick or drill in the mortar. Mortar is the space in between bricks and is made of softer material. In most cases, you will want to drill directly into brick, especially if you are hanging anything heavy up.
Step Three
After you decide where you are drilling, you will need to mark the area you are drilling into with your sharpie or a permanent marker. It’s best to measure out this area with your measuring tape and a leveling tool.
This way you know you are drilling into a central area of your wall. In addition, ensure that you are drilling into the center of your brick. Going near the outside edges of brick can actually cause it to break down.
And, if you are drilling more than one hole, ensure that your mark is level with a tool and your tape!
Step Four
Next, you will need to know the drilling depth before you begin your project. If you got a kit to help you hang up your decorations or other items, look at the measurements and use this as a guide. Your drill bit should fit with the measurements of your screws or anchors.
And, most of the time you won’t have to drill all the way through your bit. We recommend using some masking tape to stop the drill from going past your desired measurements. Just wrap it near the bottom of the bit at the measurement you want it to drill to.
Step Five
After you know how deeply you want to drill into your brick, you can start drilling. Your goggles and any ear protection should be on at this point. Drill into the wall, then start to put your screw or anchors into the hole you created.
Step Six
Finally, after you are done drilling, you can start cleaning up and hanging up your stuff. Clean up the area you drilled before you attach anything to your wall. Then start cleaning up the ground so you can get rid of any excess brick.
